It’s that time of year again. The year is over and a new one has begun. With that comes a feeling of a new beginning, a renewal, and a refreshing change. December is often a time where we take stock of our year and how we followed through on our goals, while January is a time when we set new goals and resolutions.
We all love to set goals, but it’s important to be able to follow through on them! You can’t just make a list of resolutions and be done with it. You have to make a plan on how to accomplish your goals. And if you do that this year, that’ll make this year different from all the rest.
So here are some tips on how to set out to making those goals and seeing them through!
MAKE THEM PRACTICAL
You should always have high expectations for yourself, but be realistic in your goals! Don’t set goals for yourself that you know you can’t accomplish. It’s good to reach for more, but make sure you can actually attain what you’re aiming for, and don’t just have unrealistic expectations of yourself. For example, if you want to get healthy and lose weight, think about what’s realistic for you. Maybe going to the gym every single day isn’t doable for you, but working out at home every day for 30 minutes is achievable. Be realistic with your expectations and set goals that you think you can accomplish. Otherwise, you’re just setting yourself up for disappointment.
SET TIME LINES
When do you want to accomplish these goals by? If you’re setting them for the year, then maybe it’s the end of the year. Or maybe if you have a goal that has many steps to it, think about when you want to get the first step done by, then the second, and so forth.
Setting a timeline for yourself is important because it helps you stay focused. Instead of having a vague idea of when you want to get things done by, set dates. If setting an exact date is too specific, think about the month and try to pinpoint when in the month you’ll get it done by. That way you can check in with yourself and see how far you’ve come and far you have to go. Then you can even set a new date if need be.
When you have a long list of goals, think of which ones are the most important and then go from there. There’s no point in focusing on things that aren’t as important, so think carefully about the things that are most important to you. That way you can make the most time for them, and then utilize the rest of your time accordingly for everything else. Your time won’t be wasted.
Many of us set big goals and that’s great. But we then get confused about how to accomplish them because they’re so big. Chunking them up into manageable parts is a great way to try and accomplish them. Think of your goal and how it can be broken into smaller pieces. Maybe it’s by setting timelines for the little goals, so that you can achieve the bigger goal by the end of the year.
Chunking your goals makes them more easy to manage. It’s easier to aim for smaller goals, and it helps in accomplishing them. For example, if your goal is to write a book by the end of the year, you might be so stressed out by the idea of that huge goal that you might give up in the beginning. But if you chunk it up and aim to write say 50 pages a month, then it’s easier to swallow. You can work on those 50 pages a month while still keeping an eye on the bigger prize.
CHECK IN WITH YOURSELF
January and December aren’t the only months meant for goal-making and reviewing! Check in with yourself throughout the year and see how you’re doing. Are you making progress or do you need to give yourself more time? It’s good to review your progress and it’s perfectly fine to update your goals. Maybe in May you realise that losing 50 pounds is a bit unrealistic, so instead you aim for 30. There’s no need to beat yourself up about not making your goals in December, when you can review things in the year and change things up.
Indeed Allah has a grand plan for us and that plan will go through no matter what. But what doesn’t mean that we can’t set goals for ourselves! It’s important for us to always strive for more and to always want to better ourselves. There is always room for improvement and we should always be thinking about ways in which we can do that.
January isn’t the only time to make changes in your life. Is there something you want to do in your life? Don’t wait for the new year, just start today! Because there isn’t a moment to waste.
Hope you found this useful.
