So many of us suffer from low self-esteem. We don’t know how to accept compliments. We feel negatively about ourselves most of the time. We focus on our past mistakes and can’t think positively about ourselves. We never feel like we’re good enough. We don’t know how to love ourselves.
First of all, loving yourself doesn’t mean that you have to be proud or arrogant about yourself and your accomplishments. Everything we are, we are because of God. Nothing else.
With that being said, there’s nothing wrong about feeling GOOD about yourself and taking care of yourself. In a world where narcissism is prevalent, it can be difficult to understand how to love yourself and how to feel positive again.
So here are some tips to build yourself back up so you can feel good about yourself.
MAKE A LIST OF THE POSITIVES
Whether it’s one jotted down on your phone or one scribbled on a piece of scrap paper, make a list. Really sit down and think about the things that you do well or qualities that you love about yourself. So often we get caught up in the negative, especially about ourselves. We think lowly about ourselves and our circumstances, which breeds negativity.
So hone in on those qualities or characteristics that you like about yourself. Just remind yourself of your individuality and the fact that God made you the way He did for a reason. So whenever you start thinking of all the things you can’t do or don’t have or the ways that you’re not enough, you’ll have another list of the positives at the ready.
TAKE TIME TO DO WHAT YOU LOVE
With so little time on our hands, many of us don’t get to do the things that truly make us happy at all. But we should all focus a little more on the things that we truly love to do, whether it’s writing, reading a good book, taking a walk, spending time with family or friends, gardening, etc. We all have things we need to do, whether we like to or not. Those things will most likely get done. But we should also find time for the things that we love to do, because that’s where our happiness lies.
We all make mistakes and none of us are perfect. It’s important to learn from our mistakes, but we should also not dwell on them. Dwelling on them encourages negativity as we can get stuck on all the mistakes we’ve made and all the things we’ve done wrong. Learn to forgive yourself and move on. It’s only when you forgive yourself that you’re able to move on and enjoy your life.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
Our bodies are the houses for our souls and our minds. We often forget to take care of ourselves and our bodies. If the home is dirty, then how can the things that live in it be happy and healthy? They can’t. So that’s why it’s important to take care of yourself. Whether that’s through your diet or through exercise, remember that you only have one body in this world. If your body is not well, then how will your mind and heart function?
CONFRONT YOUR EMOTIONS
Many of us neglect our emotions. We ignore them and push them down, thinking that if we pretend we don’t feel sad, annoyed, depressed, upset, etc. they’ll go away. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. All of the pushing of emotions we do is hard work and by the end of the day, we tend to feel exhausted and annoyed. We don’t know why we feel the way we feel because we haven’t really confronted our emotions and have been ignoring them all day. That is not a healthy way to live.
Instead, when you feel something, confront it. Ask yourself, why do I feel this way? What just happened? If you check in with yourself and confront your emotions when you feel something, you’ll be better equipped to deal with them so you can be on your way to feeling happy again sooner.
Learning how to love yourself is not difficult. It’s something that all of us need to work on, especially those of us who suffer from low self-esteem. It’s so easy to fall into a trap of negative thinking and criticism of ourselves. It can make us feel miserable and unhappy all the time.
We often can’t change things around us in our external environment, but we can certainly work on improving our internal environment! This all starts with taking care of yourself and thinking good things about yourself. Each and every one of us is special; we were created by the Almighty, so how could we not be? So learn how to love yourself; you’re amazing.
