Do you constantly find yourself reaching for the same tried and true outfits in your closet? When shopping, do you find yourself buying the same cut and colour of clothes only to go home and realise you own 3 other pieces in the same style? When looking through pictures, do you realise that all your outfits look exactly the same? If so, you might be stuck in a style rut!
If you want to know how to get out of a style rut, follow these simple steps to freshen up your style and change things up!
1. Make a list of outfits
Make a list of the outfits you wear the most often. Go through your pictures and write down the ones you see the most often. Make a note of repeat offenders (tops, pants, skirts, etc.) and tape the list to the inside of your closet. When getting ready, have a quick glance through your list and check to see if you’re not wearing any of the things you wear the most often. Hopefully this will help you not wear the same pieces over and over again.
2. Go window shopping
Head out to your favourite store and look at the things that catch your eye and that end up in your pile (and eventually in your closet). Do you have a weakness for crochet? Do button top shirts make you weak in the knees? Do you own way to many blue jeans?
When you’re done going through the store, have a look at your pile and see if you can pick out any one or two particular trends or pieces that you own too much of. It’s likely that that’s exactly what you’re constantly buying and wearing, so try and avoid those the next time you go shopping.
3. Edit your closet
Go through your closet and look for the items of clothing you have hardly worn and turn the hangers the opposite way. This a technique often used to clean out your closet, but if you’re trying to get out of a style rut and change up your style, there’s no need to go shopping for a completely new wardrobe. Inspiration might be hiding in your very own closet!
When planning an outfit or getting ready, try to pick some of the pieces you rarely wear. Because the hangers will be hanging the opposite way, it’ll be easier for you to spot the pieces in your closet that hardly get any love.
4. Go shopping with a friend
Is there a friend whose style you admire? Invite then to go shopping with you! Often times, we reach for the same items of clothing because it’s what we’re comfortable with. But if you’ve got a friend with a different sense of style than your own, go shopping with them and ask them if they can help you pick out a few pieces you normally wouldn’t pick yourself. Many of us get stuck in style ruts because we see the same types of clothes we already wear and end up ignoring other pieces because we don’t think they would suit us. But in order to get out of a style rut, you need to pick some pieces you normally wouldn’t wear.
5. Be adventurous!
As mentioned above, many of us get stuck in style ruts because we shop and wear the same pieces of clothing, over and over again. We ignore certain styles and pieces of clothing because we just don’t think they’ll suit us and so we end up picking the same styles all the time. But if you don’t try to be a little adventurous, you’ll be stuck wearing the same styles forever! So look at pictures of styles you admire, and try to pick pieces that you would be most comfortable in. And don’t be afraid to change things up.
If you’re stuck wearing the same style and colour of clothes, you don’t need to be stuck forever! Sometimes all it takes is a few simple tips to freshen your wardrobe up. I hope you found these tips on how to get out of a style rut useful!
Keep smiling, beautiful girls!
