Many people think that modesty is all about wearing hijab and about covering your body. But that’s not only what modesty means.
Modesty has been recommended to us by Allah is everything we do, from the way we dress to the way we act to the way we think. It goes beyond what we put on our body. It is reflected in the way we present ourselves to the world and how we treat others.
In today’s day and age, we are constantly told that we need to look out for number one: ourselves. What we want is most important, what we think is most important, what we decide is right. We are constantly told that we are the best and our egos are constantly stoked. There’s nothing wrong with confidence. There is something wrong with narcissism though, and the society that we live in is one that is extremely narcissistic. Modesty is a trait that has unfortunately been forgotten.
Allah does not like those who are narcissistic and those who have an ego, so keep that in mind as you live your life. Be happy with your success and the things you have in your life, but don’t take them for granted and don’t think that they are all because of you. If Allah has given you success, He can easily take it away in the blink of an eye. So be thankful and be modest. Do not boast about yourself, your family, or your accomplishments. Allah doesn’t like pride.
When we begin to think of ourselves in comparison to Allah and His power, we begin to realise how small we really are. Everything we do and become is all because of Allah’s grace, not because of us.
So don’t forget to be humble and modest.
A reminder for myself before anyone else.
