It’s that time of year again; January, aka the month of New Year’s Resolutions and promises. Many people begin the year with a mile long list of things to do and accomplish. It’s good to have goals, but your goals need to be achievable and attainable. And the mistake that most people make when they resolve to ‘get healthy’ is that they make goals that are too difficult to achieve. And thus they abandon their resolutions within the first few weeks of making them.

Regardless of whether you want to get healthier because of a resolution or simply because you want to change, it’s never to late! These simple 5 Ways to Get Healthy are easy, quick, and are things you can do right now. You don’t need to buy any special equipment for them or go on any specific diets. You can start NOW.

1. Drink more water

We’ve all heard of the adage that we need to drink 8 glasses of water a day, which has recently been debunked as being too specific. Regardless of what you believe about the magic number, drinking water is essential to our health. Water cleans us from the inside out, and the more we drink, we more we will clean our body.

It can be annoying to go to the bathroom constantly (especially when you need to pray or hold your wudhu), but think of this as a way of respecting and honouring your body. We eat and drink so many things in the day, and it’s important to flush them out by drinking water.

2. Walk

Aim to walk a little more everyday. We’re all in such a rush to get places, that we constantly choose the faster option. We choose the elevator over two flights of stairs, we choose to park close, we choose to drive or get dropped off. There’s nothing wrong with any of these choices, but if you can, try to walk a little more every day. If climbing the stairs all the way home or to work is too much, get off two floors earlier and walk the rest. Or park a little farther away from your destination and walk the rest. When going to the mall, enter from an entrance far from the store you want to visit and walk in the mall.

Adding a little extra walking to your day is a small way to get more exercise. Some might tell you that doing this won’t make any difference, but it will. They’re baby steps and they are ways to get your heart pumping and your blood moving. Sometimes it’s not about working out or becoming thinner or being toned. It’s just about ways to get healthy.

3. Eat more fruits and veggies

Again, I’m not telling you to change your whole diet or only eat salads. Just try to include more fruits and veggies in your diet. This can be tricky especially for people who are always on the go, and are prone to buying quick snacks that aren’t very healthy. There’s nothing wrong with having a bag of chips or a cookie (once in awhile), but try to offset these snacks with some fruits and veggies.

If you know you get hungry around midday, bring some fresh produce with you. If slicing fruit is too annoying and like too much work, throw an apple or some grapes in with your lunch. They’re simple, easy to eat fruits that require no work.

Same with veggies. If making a salad the night before work or school seems like such a chore, grab a bag of carrots or cucumber sticks to munch on during the day. Again, just adding some fruit and some veggies in the day will give your body some of the nutrients its missing. You’ll end up feeling refreshed from the fresh produce, instead of thirsty or tired.

4. Turn your phone off

This one might seem like a weird one, but it’s an important one! All day long, we are constantly on our phones. Whether it’s to listen to music, watch a video, check our email, read up on something online, message people, etc., we spend all days on our phones! All of that constant activity keeps our brain going all day long, which can be mentally exhausting. Even if there’s no sound of a notification, we’re constantly checking our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, WhatsApp, etc.

That’s why it’s important to take a break. 15 minutes before going to sleep, put your phone away. Don’t keep looking at it until you fall asleep. Put it away. Read a book or a magazine before you sleep or do some deep breathing. Not only is looking at a bright screen not that great for our eyes, constantly being on our phone prevents us from truly relaxing and taking a break. So put that phone away and just take some time to yourself, especially before sleeping and let your mind rest without all those constant notifications.

5. Stay positive

The way we think usually reflects the way we feel. So if we’re sad or upset, it tends to manifest itself in the way we feel. So it’s important to keep positive! It can tough to do in certain, dire situations, but aim to keep your positivity no matter what life throws at you. The more positively you think, the better equipped you will be to handle a situation, instead of feeling hopeless.
